General

  • What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized form of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial abnormalities, such as teeth misalignment and jaw irregularities.

  • What is a dentofacial orthopedist?

A dentofacial orthopedist is a dental specialist who has received additional training in guiding the growth and development of the face and jaw. They work in conjunction with orthodontists to ensure proper alignment of teeth and facial structures.

  • At what age should I visit an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children to visit an orthodontist around the age of 7. However, orthodontic treatment is not limited to children and teens; adults can also benefit from orthodontic care.

  • How can I schedule an appointment?

To schedule your next appointment, you can call our practice or fill out the new patient form on our website. Our friendly front desk staff will assist you in finding a convenient time for your visit.

  • Why should orthodontic problems be treated?

Orthodontic problems, if left untreated, can lead to accelerated tooth wear, difficulty in cleaning and maintaining teeth, tooth decay, gum recession, and bone loss in the jaws. Seeking orthodontic treatment can prevent these issues and improve overall oral health.

  • What are the advantages of starting orthodontic treatment at an early age?

Starting orthodontic treatment at a young age offers several advantages, including alleviating crowding, maintaining space for permanent teeth, and evaluating missing permanent teeth. Early treatment can also result in shorter and more predictable treatment durations.

  • What are the indications that my child needs orthodontic treatment?

Common indications include deep bite, underbite, open bite, thumb-sucking habits, overcrowding, mismatched teeth, and jaw size discrepancies. Consulting an orthodontist can help identify and address these issues.

  • Why is early intervention important for orthodontic problems?

Early intervention is crucial to prevent orthodontic issues from worsening. Treating misalignment problems early can prevent long-term complications and ensure optimal teeth and jaw development.

  • How does surgical orthodontics work?

Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, involves surgically correcting irregularities in the jaw. By repositioning the jaw, surgical orthodontics can help align the teeth and improve overall oral function.

  • Who is a good candidate for surgical orthodontics?

Surgical orthodontics is typically recommended for adult patients with fully formed bites. If jaw growth can no longer be manipulated with orthodontic appliances, orthodontic surgery may be required to correct jaw discrepancies.

  • What are the symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD)?

Symptoms of TMD include jaw pain, ear pain, frequent headaches, clicking or popping sounds in the jaw, swelling on the sides of the face, muscle spasms in the jaw area, and changes in teeth alignment. If you experience these symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a professional for appropriate treatment.

  • How can I prevent TMD from occurring?

To prevent TMD, you can practice relaxation techniques, avoid teeth grinding and constant gum chewing, maintain good posture, and avoid resting your chin on your hand. These simple habits can help reduce the risk of developing TMD.

  • What is dentofacial orthopedics?

Dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial growth and development, which occurs largely during childhood. It focuses on addressing facial abnormalities in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to achieve optimal dental and facial alignment.

  • What is a palatal expander and how does it work?

A palatal expander is a device that widens your upper jaw by applying gentle pressure on your upper molars during adjustments. This expansion is achieved gradually over time. Watch our instructional video for a visual demonstration of when and how to adjust your expander. After achieving the desired expansion, you'll wear the appliance for several months to solidify the results and prevent regression.

  • How do I adjust my palatal expander?

Follow these four steps for adjusting your palatal expander:

Step 1: In a well-lit area, tilt your head back.

Step 2: Insert the key firmly into the hole.

Step 3: Push the key towards the back of your mouth to rotate the fender and reveal a new hole.

Step 4: Remove the key by pushing it back and down towards your tongue. The next insertion hole should be visible.

  • What are the instructions for wearing retainers after braces removal?

To maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment and prevent your teeth from shifting back, follow these guidelines:

    • Wear your retainers full time, unless instructed otherwise by the doctor.
    • Take out your retainers when eating and always store them in their case.
    • Clean your retainers daily with a toothbrush and toothpaste, using warm water. You can also use orthodontic appliance cleaners.
    • Keep your retainers in a case when not in use to protect them from damage.
    • Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to adjust to the retainers faster.
    • Contact us immediately if your retainers are lost or broken, or if you have any questions or concerns.
    • Bring your retainers to all your appointments.
    • Avoid swimming with retainers and keep them away from hot water, car dashboards, pockets, washing machines, and napkins.
  • What are some common dental problems and their treatments?

Here are some examples of common dental problems and their respective treatments:

    • Crowding of the teeth: Braces worn for 26 months can effectively resolve crowding.
    • Deep overbite: Severe overbites may require braces and jaw surgery for correction.
    • Missing lateral incisors: Braces can be used to move teeth into position, and missing teeth can be replaced with bonded bridges.
    • Non-braces treatment: Certain cases of tooth alignment issues can be improved without braces.
    • Openbite: Special appliances and braces can correct an openbite caused by thumb-sucking.
    • Overbite: Phased treatment can align teeth and improve the bite.
    • Phase I treatment: Early intervention with expanders and partial braces can address crowding and alignment issues.
    • Spacing of teeth: Braces can close gaps between teeth and achieve an ideal bite.
    • Underbite: Treatment involving braces and jaw correction can alleviate discomfort and improve dental function.
  • How does orthodontic treatment work?

Orthodontic appliances, such as braces, gradually reposition your teeth to correct alignment. Modern braces are customizable, less noticeable, and more comfortable than older versions. They can provide faster and more convenient treatment options, leading to a permanent healthy smile.

  • What should I do if I have an orthodontic emergency?

True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but if you experience severe pain or encounter a problem you can't resolve, contact your orthodontist. They will schedule an appointment to address the issue promptly. In the meantime, you can temporarily alleviate discomfort using provided wax or rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater.

Braces

  • What are braces?

Braces are orthodontic devices used to improve the appearance and function of your smile. They come in different types, including clear braces and traditional metal braces.

  • How long do I have to wear braces?

The duration of braces treatment varies for each patient. It can take anywhere between 6 to 30 months, with the average treatment lasting about 22 months.

  • Do braces hurt?

Braces usually don't cause significant pain, but you may experience mild discomfort for a few days as your mouth adjusts to the braces.

  • Do I need to brush my teeth more often with braces?

Yes, it's essential to brush your teeth at least three times a day when you have braces to maintain oral health. Regular brushing helps remove food particles trapped in the braces. Flossing daily is also crucial to clean between the braces.

  • How should I take care of my teeth if I'm wearing braces or a retainer?

    • Remember to brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day.
    • Use fluoride toothpaste and ask your orthodontist or dentist if a fluoride rinse is necessary.
    • Schedule routine checkups with your dentist every six months.
    • Avoid sugary and sticky foods that can increase plaque and cavities.
    • Steer clear of hard and chewy foods that can get stuck in your braces.
    • If you remove your retainer, keep it safe in its container.
  • Do I still need dental checkups every six months if I have braces?

Absolutely! Regular dental checkups are even more important when you have braces. Braces can make it challenging to clean certain areas, leading to an increased risk of cavities and gum problems. Your dentist will work with your orthodontist to ensure your teeth stay healthy during the treatment.

  • Can I participate in school activities like sports, playing instruments, or singing with braces?

Wearing braces won't prevent you from engaging in school activities. If you play sports, it's advisable to wear a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth.

  • How long do people typically wear braces?

The average duration of braces treatment is one to three years, but it depends on individual factors and the complexity of the orthodontic issue. Adhering to instructions and using prescribed appliances consistently can help ensure the treatment progresses efficiently.

  • How do I take care of my appliances and braces?

Taking care of your appliances is crucial for the success of your treatment. Follow all instructions provided by your orthodontist, wear rubber bands and retainers as recommended, and maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly.

  • Can I still eat normally with braces?

While there are some restrictions on foods that may damage braces, you can still enjoy a wide variety of foods. Avoid chewy, crunchy, sticky, and hard foods that can harm your braces. Stick to softer and braces-friendly options outlined by your orthodontist.

  • What can I do to relieve general soreness and tenderness after getting braces?

    • Rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater mouthwash (1 teaspoon of salt dissolved in 8 ounces of warm water).
    • Use over-the-counter products like Orabase from a pharmacy.
    • Consider taking aspirin or your preferred pain reliever.
  • How long does the soreness and tenderness last?

General soreness and tenderness typically last for three to five days after getting braces.

  • How can I alleviate irritation to my lips, cheeks, and tongue caused by braces?

You can apply wax on the braces to reduce irritation and help the soft tissues toughen up and adapt to the braces.

  • What should I do if my appliance is loose and poking me?

Apply wax to the part of the appliance that is causing discomfort.

  • What if I have a loose bracket or band still attached to the wire?

Leave the loose bracket or band in place and apply wax on it for temporary relief.

  • What should I do if I have a loose wire?

Using tweezers, try to put the wire back into place. If that doesn't help, you can use a small fingernail clipper as a last resort to clip the wire behind the last tooth it is securely fastened to. Apply wax for additional comfort.

  • What should I do if a wire is poking me?

Use a pencil eraser to push the poking wire down or apply wax on it to alleviate discomfort.

Invisalign

  • What is Invisalign and how does it work?

Invisalign is a set of transparent aligners designed by Align Technology as an alternative to traditional braces. These aligners are removable, comfortable, and nearly invisible. They work by gradually shifting your teeth into the desired position. You wear a new set of aligners every two weeks and visit your orthodontist every six weeks to monitor progress. Treatment duration varies but typically lasts between 9 to 15 months.

  • What are the advantages of using Invisalign?

The advantages of Invisalign over braces include:

    • Removability: You can easily take out the aligners when eating, drinking, brushing, or flossing, allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods without restrictions.
    • Comfort and simplicity: Invisalign aligners are more comfortable than traditional braces, eliminating mouth abrasions and making cleaning easier.
    • Invisible appearance: The transparent aligners are barely noticeable, so you can straighten your teeth without others knowing.

    • Wear each set of aligners for two weeks, only removing them for eating, drinking, brushing, or flossing.
    • Replace the aligners every two weeks to progress through the treatment plan.
    • Visit your orthodontist every six weeks for check-ups and to ensure the treatment is on track.
    • On average, patients go through 18 to 30 aligners, completing the program in 9 to 15 months, which is often shorter than traditional braces.
  • Does Invisalign provide comfort and flexibility?

Absolutely. Invisalign aligners fit directly over your teeth and are highly comfortable and durable. They allow you to engage in contact sports, play musical instruments, and speak clearly without any hindrance.

  • What are the costs associated with Invisalign treatment?

The cost of Invisalign treatment depends on various factors such as the duration of treatment, the complexity of the issues being addressed, and any additional treatment details. We offer different payment plans to make Invisalign affordable for everyone, including credit card payments, extended monthly payments with no financing fees, flex plan payment arrangements, and insurance coverage.

  • Can Invisalign be covered by insurance?

Some insurance plans offer coverage for orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign. Contact your insurance provider to inquire about your coverage and potential reimbursement for a portion of the treatment cost.
